How to Pack Liquids for Moving: A Step-by-Step Guide to Prevent Spills
Learn how to pack liquids for moving without spills. Expert tips on securing bottles, choosing containers, and protecting your belongings from leaks during your move.
Moving with kids means more than packing boxes. It means protecting their routines. It means keeping their friends close and their sense of home intact. In New York City, it also means one more thing: the Department of Education, or DOE.
A move across boroughs can shift your child’s zoned school. Even a move of a few blocks can do the same. Moving during the school year in NYC adds one more layer. Most parents don’t think about it until the truck is loaded.
This guide covers the key steps. First, how to check your new school zone. Next, when to contact a Family Welcome Center. Then, what papers to have ready. Finally, how the process shifts between a mid-year move and a summer move. Work through this early. Your child keeps their spot in school while the rest of the move gets handled.
Check your school zone before you sign a lease. Check it before you close on a home, too. NYC assigns most elementary schools by home address. It often assigns middle schools this way, too. Zone lines can split a single block in half. Two nearby buildings can land in other zones.
The DOE runs a tool called Find a School. You’ll find it at schools.nyc.gov. Here’s how to use it:
If you’re moving to a new school zone in Brooklyn, take this step seriously. Park Slope, Bay Ridge, and Bushwick all have zone lines that split blocks. Even longtime residents get this wrong. Don’t guess. Don’t trust a real estate listing that names a “zoned school.” Check it yourself, or call the school.
If your zoned school has no open seat, the DOE must offer your child a seat close by. This rarely happens. A zoned school comes first in line. It is not a promise.
Some searches show no zoned school at all. This means your area uses a choice system instead. You apply to schools in your district. No school gets picked for you.
Three NYC districts work this way for both elementary and middle school:
Families here can apply to any school in the district. Every family gets the same shot.
High schools don’t work this way. NYC does not zone any high school. All students apply through one citywide process in 8th grade. This is true no matter where you live.
Once you know your zone, you fall into one of two groups. If you have a zoned school, register there directly. If you don’t, or you want a new school, you need the Family Welcome Center.
Family Welcome Centers, or FWCs, were once called Enrollment Offices. They help families with kids from pre-K through 12th grade. Each borough has one. Staff can help you with:
Centers are open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Friday, hours run 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Walk-ins are fine, but an appointment saves time. Call 718-935-3500 to book one. Bring your papers even to a virtual visit.
Moving to a new school zone in Brooklyn that falls in District 23? Plan on a Family Welcome Center visit. You can also apply through MySchools. There’s no default zoned school here. The same goes for District 1 and District 7.
High schools aren’t zoned. So every high school transfer runs through an FWC. The DOE grants transfers under set hardship types:
A move can turn a 20-minute ride into an hour and a half. That often qualifies for travel hardship. Bring proof of your new address to the Family Welcome Center to start this request.
Once you know where your child is headed, gather your papers. Missing papers cause more delays than anything else.
You need two papers that show your current address. Common choices include:
Not the leaseholder or homeowner? Maybe you’re staying with family. In that case, fill out a Parent Affidavit of Residency instead. None of these forms need a notary. Most come in several languages, too.
New York State requires each child to be fully vaccinated for their age. There are no non-medical exemptions here. Bring your child’s vaccine record when you enroll. Don’t have it yet? Most schools give you a short window, often around two weeks, to send proof. Check the exact deadline with your new school. It can shift by case.
Round out your folder with:
A NYC DOE address change isn’t just for switching schools. Staying at the same school after your move? You still need to update your address on file. Hand your two proof-of-address papers to your child’s current school as soon as your move is final. This keeps emergency contacts, bus routes, and mailed notices correct.
The paperwork stays much the same whether you move in October or July. The timing does not.
Transferring public schools during an NYC move mid-year brings real time pressure. Seats can run tight once the year is underway. Your child’s file will carry partial-year grades that need to move, too. Talk to your child’s teacher and guidance counselor early. A short call between the two schools helps a lot. It can protect their spot in reading groups, math placement, and any other support already in place.
Mid-year transfers to Gifted & Talented programs need a hardship or a move as the reason. A seat must be open, too. Is your child in a G&T program now? Ask the Family Welcome Center about this directly.
A summer move gives you more room to plan. Most families use this window to register at a new zoned school. Others book a Family Welcome Center appointment before the fall rush hits. Centers often help kids without a school first, in August and September. Book your slot as early as you can. Have your papers ready well before day one.
Checking your new zone. Booking a Family Welcome Center slot. Tracking down a utility bill from the right 60-day window. A family move in NYC takes real time and real focus. And that’s before a single box gets packed.
